Facebook Membership Guidelines

By joining & participating in our social media properties, you agree to the following guidelines. Failure to follow these guidelines may result in termination of membership to all Rise Media digital properties.

Rise Media is proud to manage a number of social media properties across various outlets.  Most of our social media properties are found on Facebook in the form of community groups and pages, which cover a variety of topics and interests. Within all of our social media properties, we have over 15,000 members.

These properties are managed by a team of volunteer administrators.  These admins are tasked with dealing with a variety of opinions, personalities, and issues — and they give back to our community by volunteering their time to ensure all policies are fairly enforced.

Having a team of admins, however, is not enough.  The core responsibility of civility and mutual respect rests with those who join our social media properties and contribute to our community fabric by sharing news & events and interacting with each other via dialog and respectful discourse. To that end, we have established the following Membership Guidelines that govern your membership to our social media properties.

Membership Eligibility

Membership into Rise Media’s social media properties is open to individuals which meet the qualifications and guidelines of the social media network.  For example, on Facebook, members must be in compliance with Facebook’s Community Standards and must be at least 13-years-of-age or older.  Review the policies of social media networks prior to joining.

1. Member Behavior

Members of our social media properties are expected to act with civility and respect.  We will not tolerate:

  1. profanity (vulgarities or obscene language of a graphic or sexual nature);
  2. bullying (repeated unwanted, aggressive behavior that involves a real or perceived power imbalance, such as making threats, spreading rumors and/or attacking someone on purpose); and,
  3. trolling (sowing discord by starting quarrels or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages with the intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal, on-topic discussion, often for one’s own amusement).

Comments or posts engaging in bias on the basis of race, color, sex, age, personal appearance, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, family responsibilities, religion, national origin, citizenship status, marital status, genetic information, disability, political or union affiliation, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state, or local law will not be tolerated and will result in permanent removal from our social media properties.

2. Politics and Religion

Politics and religion are sensitive topics. We expect our members to adhere to mutual respect in regards to how they interact with each other.

Political discussion should be relevant to our local community and be respectful.  We do not allow political ideology to be used to advocate for the discrimination against members of our community on the basis of race, color, sex, age, personal appearance, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, family responsibilities, religion, national origin, citizenship status, marital status, genetic information, disability, political or union affiliation, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state, or local law.

Our social media properties are not the place to proselytize.  To that end, Rise Media’s properties may not be used to advocate or promote religious dogma or doctrine.  Members may post community events hosted by religious groups — such as concerts, yard/bake sales, community BBQs, festivals and fair (providing such events are open to the community, including members of other faiths/religious communities).

3. Reviews and Whistle Blower Posts

We invite members to discuss their experiences with local businesses (and business relationships with individuals).  If a business/individual has wronged you or someone you know, please only share the facts.  Please exclude any personal opinion, profanity or name calling.  Explain how you were wronged, what you tried to do to fix it and any response you may have received.

We welcome posts that warn the public about shady business practices or poor service.  You may not, however, post about a personal disagreement with an individual in a non-business relationship.  Our social media properties are not designed for you to “air your dirty laundry” as it applies to your interactions with others.

4. Free Speech & Debates

Rise Media recognizes the importance of the free exchange of ideas and information.  We do not censor the content of our member’s posts or comments, provided members adhere to these Guidelines.  These guidelines are not meant to restrict free speech but rather to encourage civil discourse that is respectful and fact-based.

We expect all members to conduct themselves respectfully. Please remember the guidelines in #1 above.  Admins reserve the right to remove posts and/or comments or to turn off comments for posts that get out of hand.  Members who violate our behavior guidelines will be permanently removed from our social media properties.

5. Administrators

Our administrators are volunteers who donate hundreds of hours a month to ensuring our social media properties run smoothly.  All admin activity is logged and reviewed by senior staff regularly for compliance and accountability.

If you feel one of our admins has taken adverse actions against you in one of our social media properties, without justified cause, you can contact us directly to discuss your situation.  All admin actions are appealed directly to our administrative team, where a final decision is determined.

Blocking an admin.
It is important that members of our social media properties be able to see posts made by admins that could be informational or instructional in nature.  Blocking admins keeps you from seeing that admins posts & comments, but that admin can still see what you post or comment in the social media property.

To effectively manage our social media properties, members need to be able to see informational and instructional posts & comments from our admins.  Members who block our admins will have their membership terminated from all Rise Media social media properties.

6. Arrests & Police Reports

It is Rise Media’s policy to act in a responsible and sensitive way when we publish or make available police activity logs and information surrounding arrests in our community.

We publish, in text format, the daily police activity logs provided to us by law enforcement.  This information is provided to you exactly as it is provided to us.  If the information we publish contains inaccurate information, we encourage you to contact the corresponding law enforcement agency for correction.

Anyone who is the subject of a post involving an arrest is assumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.  Information pertaining to arrests within our social media properties should not be used in making a decision concerning employment, housing, lending or any other personal business matter.

Rise Media does not engage in the publication of mugshots for the purpose of informing the public of an arrest.  Doing so, we believe, is a form of shaming / cyberbullying and is a violation of our behavior guidelines.

Rise Media may, in the course of our reporting, include mugshots of accused suspects in our news articles.  When we do so, we make every attempt to provide full details from both law enforcement and the suspect’s perspective.

7. False, Misleading, Clickbait-y, and/or Satirical “News” Sources

Rise Media believes that it is in the public interest to restrict the publication of information from outlets known to perpetuate intentional misleading of the public.  We will not allow the posting of “fake news” outlets within our digital properties.

8. Business Ads & For Sale Posts

Our social media properties are designed to connect the community together and provide for an easy exchange of information and ideas.  We do not allow unpaid commercial promotion in our social media properties, without advanced permission.

Business Ads.
Businesses are not permitted to use our social media properties to advertise or promote products or services.  Facebook prohibits unsolicited business promotion outside of its advertising mechanism.  If you own a business and want to advertise on Facebook, you should be using Facebook’s advertising tools to do so — not spamming local groups/pages with your ads.

Rise Media recognizes the role we play in connecting the community with locally owned businesses.  We work closely with small businesses to help promote their products and services.  If you are looking to utilize the Rise Media network to reach our community, our advertising department is available to help you.

For sale posts by individuals.
Facebook has become the quickest and easiest way to sell unwanted items you may have laying around the house.  We recognize this, which is why we created Rise Media Classifieds to serve that purpose.  We do not permit the posting of “for sale” or “in search of” in our other groups and pages.  These posts may only be made within Rise Media Classifieds.

9. Other Terms

Membership in Rise Media’s social media properties is subject to our Terms of Use policy.
